NAMBARA ARTS AND CRAFTS

The Nambara logo represents Nambara , a special place for all community tribes to meet.
The water carrier at the top is the collector of knowledge. The water held in the bark carrier is brought to the special place for safekeeping.
The diamonds represent the knowledge stored.
The two Baru (crocodiles) represent the guardians of this special knowledge. Yolngu use this as a metaphor to describe the role of Nambara Arts and Crafts.
Nambara collects the special knowledge in the form of Yolngu visual culture and looks after it for all Yolngu clans.

ABOUT YOLNGU ART

According to traditional beliefs, the north-east Arnhemland landscape and its inhabitants were brought into being during the travels of the Creator Ancestors long ago.

These ancestors travelled the land, naming and creating as they went.

As the ancestors travelled, they left people behind and gave them the the knowledge they needed to survive and look after what had been named.

This knowledge finds its expression in everyday life and in the ceremonies of initiation, rites of passage, revelation or mourning.

Each clan has its own set of ritual designs, songs and dances which interrelate with other clans of this region.

Through the performance of these ceremonies, the past is recreated.  The paintings on bodies, the songs and dances, retell the journeys and deeds of the totemic ancestors.

It is from this context that the Yolngu  (Aborigine from north-east Arnhemland) art receives its inspiration.
