YBE has the internal capacity to perform major civil engineering
tasks throughout the top end of NT, WA and Qld, with a large
range of heavy earth moving equipment, including dozers,
scrapers, loaders, road trains, water carts, dump trucks and excavators.
Earthworks Construction
Earthworks construction - earthmoving, rebuilding and maintaining tailings dams, earthmoving for new capital projects, and carting topsoil, sand, and limestone for fill to rehabilitate mined areas - is not only a significant part of YBE's business, but one with considerable scope for future growth.
Major projects for Alcan Gove recently include:
Pond 7 construction - $8 million
Pond 6 Extension - $5 million.
Pond 6 uplift - $9 million.
Road and Airfield Construction
Developing new roads and airfields and maintaining them is a
crucial service, particularly in the tropical conditions of northern
Australia. For a number of years, YBE has tendered successfully to
the NT Department of Transport and Works. Currently YBE
maintains the Central Arnhem Road between Nhulunbuy and the
Goyder River and has undertaken significant tasks like the
$800,000 resurfacing of the Numbulwar airstrip.
Ore Haulage
Haulage of bauxite from Nabalco's Rocky Bay site continues to be a
mainstay of YBE's business, accounting for almost 12% of the
company's revenue.
As part of its commitment to expanding this business and meeting
Nabalco's needs, YBE expanded and upgraded its vehicle fleet in
1999, enabling the company to increase the amount of ore that it
transported in that year by 20% to 1.2 million tonnes.
