There are around 4000 Napaki (non Indigenous) people in the township of Nhulunbuy, here because of the Alcan Gove bauxite mine and alumina processing plant. There are also around 10,000 Yolngu (Indigenous) in north east Arnhem Land. The Gove area is around 12 degrees south of the equator, so naturally it is hot and tropical, with two distinct seasons, the "wet" and the "dry", with a build up season in between. The township of Nhulunbuy has most of the facilities of a typical Australian country town, but the cost of living is a little higher than other mainland areas because most supplies come by barge. For six months of the year it is not possible to drive out because of flooded roadways. Nevertheless, life here is pleasant, with ample opportunities for recreation activities such as yachting, fishing, golf, tennis, surf lifesaving and many others. The schools here are among the best in the NT, and it is safe for kids to walk or ride to school by themselves. At last count there were five watering holes and three churches.
